Since the beginning of the 1990's, Murakami has been producing works based on images taken from cartoon characters that are closely associated with contemporary Japanese sub-culture. At first glance, his work seems light-hearted, but in fact, it is full of irony and a critical attitude towards civilization.
In this particular work, Murakami likens a mattress, something anybody is familiar with in his/her P.E. (physical education) class, to a pie and places bowling and shot put balls connected to each other on top of the mat to add a playful element. Seen from a different angle, however, it looks like a tool in a school play ground that can turn into a murderous weapon, expressing hidden danger.
