I was deeply impressed by Japan's creation myths closely related to Kirishima -the genesis of a nation-building by the gods such as Izanami-no-mikoto Izanagi-no-mikoto, and Amaterasu-Ohmikami.
A pair of marble cylinders, one white and the other black, represent the first two gods and a bright yellow onyx symbolizes the goddess of light Amaterasu. The paper roled up into the two cylinders represents the eternal movement and at the same time the union of the dark and light. Written on the paper is the history of Japan itself. The inlaid map of Japan shows the emerging Japan in the process of movement. Amaterasu is like a mother's womb whose flesh extends softly in all directions. Amaterasu, the sun goddess, has a navel (hollow in the center) just like Venus, the goddess of beauty. Light that filters through the goddess, but not like arrows, enfolds the object softly like a skirt.
The two scrolled paper cylinders are placed in the direction of east and west and the slant face of Amaterasu turns toward the sun at noon. As the work is installed in a space like a magnetic needle, the audience, looking at it from the entrance, will fall under an illusion that the work, like a trompe l'oeil, lies quite near. Then, they will realize the substance as they approach the work, watch, touch and feel it with their own hands.
