Ishikawa Naoki Exhibition [island≒mountain]

Ishikawa Naoki Exhibition [island≒mountain]

With an interested in cultural anthropology and folklore, Ishikawa Naoki has widely traveled Japan and the world, exploring its frontiers and cities and presenting his works along the way.

“Looking at archipelagos from above, I’ve come to see the land we call ‘islands’ as mountains whose faces protrude from the sea. In the past, a famous Japanese folklorist by the name of  Yanagita Kunio focused on the resemblance between mountains and islands. He said, ‘They’re similar not only in their geographic circumstances but also with regard to the nature of people’s lives in these locations.’ Islands, where land and sea are in contact with one another, are fundamentally mountains. And mountains are essentially islands as well.”

This exhibit starts out as a reflection upon these matters. Through Ishikawa’s photographs, we take another look at the islands that spread from Kagoshima to Asia, islands Ishikawa has been interested in since he was a teenager.
