The artist Asami Kiyokawa fuses embroidery and photography to limn a visionary borderland between reality and myth, between the visible and invisible. In this exhibition, Kiyokawa weaves the themes she has explored in her work to date—the inner self, the relationship between humans and nature, and the myths and memories we share—with her customary delicacy and compelling visuals. Visitors can enjoy pieces from a wide range of series, including major and most recent pieces from Tokyo Monster, I:I, Ametsuchi no Uta, Serendipity, and Mythology. They invite the viewer to leave the labyrinth of the present and enter the age of myths, and experience whole new discoveries and serendipities. This is an unmissable exhibition not only for art lovers, but anyone interested in photography, fashion, nature, and mythology.

ARTIST
- Asami Kiyokawa
- Born on Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture, Asami Kiyokawa first came to prominence as an amateur fashion model in magazines in the 1990s, after which she launched her career as an artist. While studying apparel at Bunka Fashion College in the 2000s, she began exploring the possibilities of fashion and self-expression. She has continued to enjoy the limelight ever since her first solo exhibition in 2001.
Her practice focuses on and renders visible the discrepancies and contradictions that arise between internal and external personal identities in society, exposed as it is to vast amounts of information through social media, magazines, and other media systems. Known for her unique style of embroidering onto photographs, magazines, books, and fabric, she creates work that fuses traditional techniques with digital technology, including collaborations with virtual models. Her work has appeared in numerous solo and group exhibitions and art fairs in Japan and around the world.
Kiyokawa is also involved recently in other creative fields like advertising, videography, spatial design, and product design as well as illustrated children’s books and regional revitalization projects. Her many awards include selection for the VOCA Honorable Mention Award, VOGUE JAPAN Women of the Year, and Asiagraph Award Tsumugi Prize. Her recent output includes the original art and overall supervision for the much-discussed large public work Our New World (Toranomon) installed in Toranomon Hills Station. Kiyokawa is also a visiting professor at Osaka University of Arts.
