Steam and water gush up from underground, a waterfall flows, and plumes of smoke rise up from a volcano. These images showing the workings of nature were inspired by Uematsu’s trip to Kagoshima. The work, strongly informed by the French philosopher Gaston Bachelard’s assertion that materi- al is the source of imagination, depicts the earth’s dynamism, based on the circulation of energy, as a story.
